Interview with Greg Shaw & Nifty – (Duncan Crane)

Greg 2Nifty Hi Greg, Duncan,

Thanks for taking time to speak to us greatly appreciated,

Just a few to run past the two off you…..

1. Bristol has always had a thriving underground music scene – whats been a big influence to you guys growing up amongst all that?

For me it was the whole scene itself, its pretty tight in Bristol everyone knows each other. Soon after moving to Bristol in 2007 I was lucky enough to be playing regularly for the established nights that were running in the city. Over the years of playing out and going back to after parties we all learnt off each other. During these years was when my music and style became more defined.

2. You guys have a very strong sound to your production, how long have you been making music and do you have any classical training?

Thankyou! I have been producing for around 3 years now, the first year I was just playing around with different software trying to workout how everything worked. Then after a suggestion from one of my friends I did an evening course at Access To Music for a year, this helped a lot with learning how to use Logic and for what I wanted to get out of it. Once I finished the course I started working with Duncan and we produced our first track “Topless” soon after.

3. Marzipan has been getting some fantastic feedback so far on promo – how does that feel after all your hard work?

It been great, we produced Marzipan by bouncing ideas to each other via dropbox, Once we both felt there was enough content to play with we met up and over a few studio sessions the track soon came together. Even though we were both loving the tracks in the studio, you never know how a track will go down, so to see all the positive feedback has been amazing.

4. People are now taking there music out on a live platform to promote a release, would this be something you would consider doing in the future?

Definitely, about 2 years ago I was performing regularly with Ableton Live, where I would use stems from tracks to live mix with standard tracks, I have always had the desire to perform a set which uses more and more of my own material.
I am currently experimenting/testing with a Traktor set up using a DJM900 nexus mixer along with a X1 and F1 controller, with the idea to create remix sets of my own tracks to play out live.

5. Now that Marzipan is out there, whats next for you guys?

Duncan and I have a few of our own projects and tracks which are nearing completion and we have lots of ideas for new tracks to work on together in the pipeline.

6. Finally, thanks for answering all our questions but before we go – describe yourselves in 3 words?

Geek, Perfectionist, Chatterbox

Nifty…..(Duncan)

1. Bristol has always had a thriving underground music scene – whats been a big influence to you guys growing up amongst all that?

For me it was all the free parties that were happening in the early 90’s. That’s where I cut my teeth playing out to 1000’s of people in a field.

2. You guys have a very strong sound to your production, how long have you been making music and do you have any classical training?

Thank you! I have had no training what so ever. I have spent a LOT of time reading & practicing as much about music as possible.

3. Marzipan has been getting some fantastic feedback so far on promo – how does that feel after all your hard work?

It’s always nice to be appreciated by your peers & with so many other tracks in the pipeline I aim to improve with each one. As for hard work, I don’t think it’s either of those!

4. People are now taking their music out on a live platform to promote a release, would this be something you would consider doing in the future?

Yes, absolutely! For me it’s all about feeding off the energy of the people dancing & feeding that back into a performance. Performing ‘live’ allows you to do that.

5. Now that Marzipan is out there, whats next for you guys?

I have 3 other tracks that are nearing completion so concentrating on getting those finished & signed.

6. Finally, thanks for answering all our questions but before we go – describe yourselves in 3 words?

Just about normal.
